Channel Islands LA Store Party

I am stoked to say I attended CI's LA store party this past Saturday. It was super fun not only because most of my favorite surfers were there, but one of my favorite bands played! Iration performed on the roof of the CI/ Burton shop on Melrose and it was raging. Kelly Slater had a heat to attend at the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles and it did not stop him from dancing the night away to Iration's hit songs. I was stoked to run into my longtime friend Dane Reynolds and his girlfriend Courtney (those two are classic). Channel Islands raffled off a couple of signed boards; one of them an ex board of Taylor Knox's; the other was one of Dane's Magic Carpets. I had a blast and I am pretty sure everyone else did as well. Thanks everyone for attending and Channel Islands you guys rock.

Perfect with a Sandwich

If you have not tried one yet I suggest doing so. They will give you energy but not too much and best of all a relief of any stress or anxiety. For instance I got a flat tire driving home from the beach today and was not letting it get to me. After I fixed it and with the help from some randoms. I then hit some traffic and was trying not to let it disturb me but traffic is annoying. I came home had a Just Chill then I was all cooled down after that. Thanks Just Chill!!

Bud Light Lime Labor day Cup Surf Bash (Iphone pics)

It was another epic contest put on by Benji Weatherley and the Bud Light Lime staff. The south swell that blessed the Billabong Pro in Tahiti ended up making its way to the Point in Ventura for an awesome weekend full of great surf. Every surfer in the event was performing well. In the end the event champion was Torrey Meister who put on a tremendous air show pulling off maneuvers like The Kerrupt flip and going ahead to finish it off with full 360 air reverse. It was great to watch guys like Sunny Garcia and The Beschen brothers destroy the C-street walls. Also Tim Curran put on an amazing show with sky high airs and going for a few of his patent backflips.Another standout was Nate Yeomans who came up close to taking the win punting airs into the wind. The party put on by
Bud Light Lime was also epic with free food for competitors and staff alike going down at Rookees sports bar. I would like to thank Benji for inviting me to this event, I had a great time and cant wait for another one of its kind.

About the Labor Day Cup:

The Labor Day Cup will be held at The Point in Ventura, CA on Labor Day Weekend. IMG is partnering with Surfline.com to broadcast highlight footage of each event’s contests, including full airings of the finals and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.

The window for the second stop of the Bud Light Lime Surf Series willcommence on Friday, September 2, 2011 and conclude on Sunday, September 4, 2011.

In an effort to provide the best opportunity for athletes and spectators, the contest time frame will adjust to the conditions. Thus, the event may run for one to eight hours a day. Each athlete in the event will surf at least twice and their top two waves will be counted.

Contest Window: Friday, September 2, 2011 Saturday, September 3, 2011 Sunday, September 4, 2011

Contest Time: Will run based on water conditions between 8:00am - 5:00pm. The contest committee will determine the schedule on a daily basis.

Trip to Channel Islands

I recently made a visit to the Channel Islands Factory to visit. There was a brand new Rookie there for me (stoked!!!!) I also got to get my friend James Cummings from the Northeast of England a tour provided by Blake Howard. It was a good time as we walked through the biggest board manufacture in the U.S. The staff at Channel Islands is awesome they all work very hard to make sure people get the boards they ask for . It is crazy to see what a big brand it has developed into since I was a young lad. I was so stoked to get my new board and sure enough James got his hands on a used Dagger. I then brought his board in my bag to England then it got handed off to another surfer, then made the ten hour trip back to James's house.I ended up riding his board in the contest I surfed in(Newquay Relentless Boardmasters)it went really good even though it was 5'8 1/2 and I am 6'3. I am super pumped on riding Channel Islands at the moment and I am more than happy to share a few shots from that day.Big thanks to Travis Lee, Scott Martinson, Blake Howard, Mike Walters, and the rest of the crew....

This is the Boardmasters Music Festival in Watergate,Cornwall,England. It was a great event with over 15,000 people all piled up on a grassy field. The headline band was Fatboy Slim and he performed to everyones expectations. It was a memorable night for me.So many people in costumes and with painted faces, was awesome! Can't wait to attend another music fest in the near future.

The offshore hotel where I stayed was the perfect surfers getaway.

"This is the best contest I have ever been to" Said Hune~r as he drinks his Bud Light Lime, As things started to wind down on the final day of competition. He was there to have a good time and watch his mates and hometown hero out of Santa Barbara Chris Brown surf in the Legends of the Bud Tour. He showed up to expect any standard contest but was amazed by the luxury of the contest area Bud Light Lime provided as a contest sponsor. This is huge to a lot of surfers and surf contest fans. Surf contest have started to change by having more beach giveaways,food,drinks,and activities for competitors and fans alike.This keeps a more positive vibe going in and out of the water for a more delightful event. The ending outcome of everyone leaving the beach with more than a sticker or poster. I was super stoked when Benji Weatherly invited me to this event and watching the best surfers in the world from out in the water was insane. I watched a lot of the Legends of Bud Tour on TV as a young kid. The rest of the rooster of the Pro I saw in surf movies and on the Asp world tour so to be in the same contest was a huge honer. I surfed in the Nssa with some of the guys so to be back at Church kinda felt like a surf contest ruin ion The Hawaiians were in full effect and having a great time.

I took a trip to New York to catch some Hurricane waves. I left 12 hours after deciding that it was worthy of a surf trip. I flew out of Santa Barbara airport and arrived in New York at the JFK airport. I got some sleep that night then woke up and we drove 4 hours to a spot in Delaware we had scored last summer on Hurricane Bill. We drove along the Jersey Shore and then caught a ferry to Delaware. We went for a surf but the conditions were nothing like last year when we got 6-foot draining barrels. So we decided to take the ferry back to Jersey and look for some surf there. We drove for another hour then got to a beach in Ocean City and it was terrible nothing liked we had planned to get on this swell but we did see bigger waves down the beach. So we kept on driving and sure enough we pull up to jetty wave and it looks super fun rights just peeling for good amount of time. We all had a good session and were very surfed out after that. That was day one. The next the swell would be at its peak and planning had to be spot on.

Long Island above

We check the forecast for the winds and came to the conclusion that Long Island would be a good spot among many. So we woke up and drove straight to the beaches near Long Beach but probably fifteen minutes away(from Long Beach) at a place called Gilgo where big waves slightly break on the Outside and then dump hard on the inside. We were stoked to see good size waves and a couple good peaks up and down the beach. I surfed for about an hour then we went more towards Long Beach to see what was going on there. I paddled back out in front of a jetty where a fun right was. The winds at this point were side offshore and making it difficult to do turns or airs. Adam Lambert and Andrew Bennett paddled out to get some waves and both got some incredible rides. We decided to grab some food and then head back to the beach. After eating some food at a local Cafe. We drove back to see the wind was now straight offshore and the waves were epic. Some of the best East Coast I had ever seen. We grabbed our boards and ran down the beach while Seth our Photographer and friend had to pay for parking which cost us $25.00 bucks. We did not really care at this point we were stoked to get some good waves.We surfed for another four hours and got some fun tube rides the best part was looking up or down the beach and seeing a wave just barrel and spit its guts out. People on the beach were freaking out watching the waves and everyone had their cameras out snapping shots. We all came in to the beach tired and surfed out and I could not watch any more waves go unridden so I forced myself back out there and I was so stoked I did. About twenty minutes into my session the sun started to slightly make its way out of the clouds. Then another twenty minutes later the whole sky went purple and orange and it was one of coolest sunsets I had ever seen. I came in once there was no more light.

The next day Andrew and Adam were too tired for another surf mission. So Seth and I took a road that was crazy we drove seven hours to the northeast. We got there to find perfect waist high waves and a very crowded beach. We had stopped in Rhode Island on the way but waves looked horrible so we kept on driving. It was a fun trip and we were still glad to make the journey north even though we got skunked. Hurricane Earl was a really good wave producer but it came one day and was gone the next. It was 1:00 am when we got back to New York and I was so tired but we reviewed some footage and some photos of the trip. I had planned to leave the next day at 10:15 am out of JFK so I thought I had some time to rest. Seth had more stuff to do besides look at photos and it kept him up all night and sure enough Orbitz calls him at 4:00 am and tells him my flight is scheduled to leave at 6:30 am because he booked my flight. So Seth tries to wake me up but after two hours of sleep I did not want to get up. He said"Kilian your gonna miss your flight" he turned on the light in my room and then he walked down stairs so I turned off the light and went back to sleep. Then five minutes later I woke up to him telling me again something about my flight and how orbitz called him. So then he showed me my itinerary on his email so I finally got up and dragged myself to the airport. I luckily made my flight and came home to beautiful Santa Barbara.

I recently embarked on two trips one to Panama, and the other to Sri Lanka. One was for a photo trip to Morro Negrito Panama; the other was a contest trip to Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka. Panama was really tropical and beautiful. After we arrived we in Panama, we went and checked out the Panama Canal. It was was a cool experience to see huge cargo ships passing through such a small gap. After about a 20 or more hour trip, we arrived on a secluded island on the Pacific Coast. The crew in Panama was Branden Arroyan, Jose Marie Cabera, Nicalau Von Rupp, Juan Fernandez, Guilermo Alfonso, and a few other campers. It was a great trip minus a good size swell. I hope to head back and surf these spots again. Thanks goes out to Juan Fernandez of Surfer Rule Magazine for inviting Branden and I on this trip.

Sri Lanka was rad! We got great waves and Austin Ware ended up making it to the quarter finals in the 6 star rated event put on by Sri Lanka Airlines. Austin and I met up over there and shared a place not far from Arugam Bay where they held the event. We saw some cool things besides nice waves like a buddhist temple, a national wildlife park, a herd of elephants, and the culture of the local people! It was a special experience for sure and one I would live again given the time and money. Also congrats to Julian Wilson who won the event and Nat Young who placed Second.

This last contest I travelled to in Scotland was a big eye opener for me not only for my competitive ability but for the world and it's landmarks from the past.I flew into Edinburgh Scotland with a fresh feeling to see a new land. I would be traveling alone but that just added to the feeling of an adventure. The first task would be to get myself to Thurso where the surf contest is held. I grabbed my surfboards and travel bag and went to the rental car area just outside the airport. This would be my first time driving a rental car not only that but my first time driving on the left side of the road.I drove off with no knowledge of the roads I was trying to follow my friends who had GPS but lost them when attempting to catch up to them at a round-about. I had to pull over and look at the map then I figured out the way to Thurso which was five and half hours away. I had a couple close calls trying to pass vehicles. One time, I assumed I had a passing lane but it was for oncoming traffic I made it but narrowly missed a semi truck (coming head on) while serving into another lane right in front of a big truck.I made safely to Thurso found a B and B (bed and breakfast)and crashed out for the night. The next day I drove around for hours trying find Brims Ness: the back up Contest site which would be where I surfed my first heat.I finally found it after driving down numerous farm roads where old men walked baby sheep around their farm property.I had few close calls when I would get off the farm roads and start heading down the highway on the right side (wrong side)of the road.

I free surfed a few times before I surfed my heat the water was frigid! I ended up making it to the round of 24 and placing a equal 17th I was stoked to make it that far. I had surfed my last heat in 44 degree water and 30 degree air temp, all while snow and hail came down as I made my way into the lineup. That was a new experience in itself and totally strange. I was expecting to leave the day after I lost out but the Volcanic explosion in Iceland sent a ash cloud over all of the U.K shutting down all flights leaving the whole U.K flying space. I called the airlines and waited on hold for a hour and half to finally have a staff member tell me the next flight available would be a week from the date I planned to leave. The ash eventually left the air space thank goodness. So I was not exactly bummed I had to stay, but a little worried of being permanently stuck in Scotland. I had to return my lovely little rental car that I nearly took head on with many Euro peon's and stuffed my stinky wetsuit and booties into after every surf sesh. I spent a few more days in Thurso waiting for good waves but the coast was battered with gale force winds which meant crappy conditions. I had heard from my Aunt Caroline who was expected to be in Edinburgh, so I figured I would return my rental car and stay by the airport. On the way back to Edinburgh I got a call from Ballaram Stack who is a fellow pro surfer from Long Island, New York. He asked if he could cruise with me till we both had to leave on the next Monday.

Ballaram and I found a hotel in Edinburgh and started checking out the Castle of Edinburgh. The Royal mile is a street that dead ends at the castle and is filled with rootsy pubs and gift shops so we checked out all that stuff which was really cool. We meet up with My Aunt and got loose in a bar called The Worlds End. After that me and Balls got pointed to a place called the Opal lounge, it was raging and we a few drinks, then found ourselves wanting a snack before going to sleep so we had our taxi drop us off at McDonald's. We got to the door it was locked we read the sign that said it opens at 5:00 am so waited ten minutes to be the first costumers of the day and finish our night with sausage mcmuffins and hash browns. The employee was not so happy when I began harassing him about game pieces it just happened that McDonald's monopoly was up and running, but they did not give game pieces for breakfast not good news to someone who had been up all night drinking.

O'neill Coldwater Classic Tasmania '10

I really enjoyed traveling down under and going to the Australian state of Tasmania. The area where they hold the O'neill Coldwater Classic is abundant with surf and surf spots they had about three surf spots to run the event Nettle's Bay, Lighthouse Beach,and Bluff reef. Bluff reef never quite got big enough for the contest to move there but from the looks of last years event it is a very heavy slab. Nettle's Bay was kinda a long rolling beach break with rocky surroundings okay for contest surfing but not ideal. The Lighthouse Beach was an interesting setup with rugged rocks surrounding a beach a left would roll into the point and down the beach rights would spin down the line. This ended up being the contest site most the of time. The area is ever so expansive with fields of cattle and other creatures it is a spectacular place. I suggest visiting someday!

The final 15 were pretty well set coming into ASP WQS 6-star prime O'neill World Cup,but Dusty powered from 18th to 9th,pushing out Joan Duru,who was tied with Blake Thornton.Fortunately for Blake ,on a countback,the Australian stayed in the Asp WQS top 15,qualifying for the 2010 ASP World Tour. The J7 Team Wins FCS Surfboard Manufactures Cup

The J7 crew headed to Huntington to compete...Well we originally planned on doing well in the Jim Beam Championships. The night before the final day we over heard WQS announcer and competitor Ryan Simmons mention a FCS Surfboard Manufactures cup for the final day on Saturday. We wanted to enter but it was supposed to be full.The next day we were not doing so well in the Jim Beam event and heard the announcer call out a alternate spot for the FCS Cup.So since our team was already there we got the spot and won our first round then won the FCS Surfboard Manufactures Cup final which was worth $2000 for the team and bragging rights yippee...
